Celebrating our Timigos during National Coding Week
To celebrate National Coding Week (14 September to 20 September), we spoke to some of our expert developers to shed light on why they enjoy working in coding at Timico.
National Coding Week is an annual event, which aims to help build confidence and nurture skills, in order to close the skills gap within the technology industry. At Timico, we are dedicated to ensuring our developers and engineers have the right knowledge to succeed and as a result, our team’s coding expertise enables our customers to stay connected, productive and secure.
Among those supporting our customers is Jennifer Colquhoun, a Software Engineer. She explained why coding is an exciting career role, saying “Part of my role is focusing on challenges surrounding up and coming technology and looking at issues regarding IT infrastructure. Coding involves puzzle-solving more than anything else and unlike most jobs, a lot of our time includes coming up with new and innovative ideas. With this job, you never stop learning.”
Alex Johnson, one of our Technical Leads agreed with Jennifer. He added “My role involves technically advising the Application Development team on the best approach when coding. I also actively write code when supporting the team or working on my own development tasks.
“I always enjoy the challenge coding presents. It’s good to consider the possible ways to approach a problem and it’s always satisfying to see the results of your work. With programming, once you understand the process and concept, you can adapt what you know for nearly every problem.”
Coding allows you to express your creative side.
Thomas Williams, is also a Software Engineer, working closely with Alex. He said: “My primary function is to develop code and solutions to either make new product ideas a reality or enhance existing features.
“Coding allows you to express your creative side even though it is a very logical job. There isn’t just one way to solve a solution. I believe this adds another dynamic to the role as you are constantly learning not just new technologies, but other people’s creative knowledge. With an open mind, you can constantly self-improve.”
With National Coding Week having a strong focus on closing the skills gap, Thomas also gave his advice for securing a career in coding. He added: “If you enjoy problem-solving and expressing your own ideas, this is the industry for you. Never be afraid to speak up and put your opinion forward, give knowledge just as much as you take it and be a key team player. There is more to a software developer role than simply knowing all the syntax.”
